Ash Wednesday is a unique time where we contemplate our mortality while without fear. Most of the time when we think of our lives ending, we sense the anxiety of illness and pain. But in Ash Wednesday, we contemplate God’s grace that aids us when this mortal life fails us.
By saying aloud, “From dust you came and to dust you will return,” we are admitting that our frail flesh is not eternal, our bodies are temporary. By taking communion after this statement, acknowledge the faith and power that will last forever in the person of Jesus Christ.
