There have been some tough news stories this week. It seems that our world is at war with itself. What has touched me most strongly was the innocents that have suffered because of arbitrary violence. This week is also the Advent Lesson of Joy, which may be hard to contemplate amidst our harsh world. Yet Christians through the ages have found way to look beyond their present circumstances to find Joy.
I think of the third verse in “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,” which says:
And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing!
Please listen to my talk on the Lesson of Joy.
