George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation was given at the bequest of the Senate and Congress. November 26, 1789 was a Thursday, and the weather was miserable. Few New Yorkers showed up at St. Paul’s Chapel to see the president: “I went to St. Paul’s Chapel,” Washington wrote in his diary, “though it was most inclement and stormy.” There were “but a few people at Church.” Yet George Washington’s words still echoes through history to teach us the importance of giving thanks to God.
